Florida Babysitter Charged with Manslaughter After Leaving Infant in Hot Car

In a tragic incident that highlights the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles during hot weather, a Florida babysitter is now facing a manslaughter charge after leaving an infant in a hot car for hours. Rhonda Jewell, 46, had picked up the 10-month-old baby girl and drove to another residence where she was scheduled to babysit.

However, Jewell made a grave mistake by leaving the baby in the car while she went inside the home. It wasn’t until the baby’s mother arrived in the afternoon to pick up her child that the heartbreaking discovery was made. The mother found the little girl in the car, unresponsive and suffering from the extreme heat.

First responders rushed to the scene and immediately transported the unresponsive baby to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite their efforts, the infant was pronounced dead. Authorities wasted no time in holding Jewell accountable for her negligence. Subsequently, she was arrested for aggravated manslaughter of a child and faced an initial court appearance.

During the hearing, the judge set Jewell’s bond at $25,000, which came with GPS monitoring to ensure she remains within authorized limits. Furthermore, the judge ordered Jewell to have no contact with the victim’s grieving family and instructed her to surrender her passport. In arriving at this decision, the judge considered Jewell’s ties to Baker County and her lack of criminal history.

The devastating incident unfolded amidst a severe heatwave in Jacksonville, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The National Weather Service even issued an excessive heat warning for the area, cautioning residents about the dangerous heat index values reaching as high as 115 degrees. The combination of these extreme temperatures and Jewell’s unthinkable oversight tragically led to the untimely death of an innocent child.

Baker County Sheriff Scotty Rhoden expressed his condolences and deep sorrow for the victim’s family. In a statement, he conveyed the community’s broken hearts and the need for everyone to remain vigilant in safeguarding children, especially during such extreme weather conditions.

This heartbreaking case serves as a grim reminder that leaving children unattended in vehicles, particularly during sweltering heat, poses a significant risk to their well-being and can have devastating consequences. It is crucial for parents, caregivers, and society as a whole to be acutely aware of this danger, taking all necessary precautions to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
