Save the date! Minecraft the movie will be premiered on March 4, 2022, in US theatres! Although 2022 is quite far away in the future, the developers explained that creating a live-action movie takes a lot of work. The Minecraft movie is also collaborating with Warner Bros, so it is safe to say that it should be worth the wait!
In a blog post written by the Minecraft staff, they presented part of the plot:
“[…] We’ll tell you the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
They chose Peter Sollett as director of the movie – the same person behind Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (the high school band comedy-drama). Peter Sollett has also been the director of the episodes The Path and wrote Long Way Home, his first feature. His work included several big names like Julianne Moore, Ellen Page and Steve Carell (Freeheld).
The developer added that making a movie is something new and exciting, but while it will be different from the game, they “want to make the movie — just as we make the game — for you.”
The Minecraft Movie Inspired By the Community
As for what we might see in the movie, except for that short plot summary, the dev team added:
“We’re inspired by countless things, but none as much as the incredible stuff our community creates in Minecraft every day.”
The two producers that will join the director are Vu Bui and Roy Lee. Vu Bui is the COO at Mojang, and Roy Lee has credits for working on The Lego Movie, How To Train Your Dragon franchises, It and The Ring. Lee is also working on an adaptation of Just Cause and several other impressive projects which include a remake of Fortnite and PUBG Battle Royale genre.
