Bill Paxton, a charismatic and prolific actor whose many memorable roles include that of an astronaut in Apollo 13 and that of a treasure hunter in Titanic, died of complications as a result of an operation. He was 61 years old.

A family member announced the death of the actor on Sunday without providing further details.

Bill Paxton, of Fort Worth, Texas, has appeared on dozens of movies and television shows. On the cinema side, he has participated in some of the most significant films of the last 40 years, such as Titanic, Terminator and Aliens , three James Cameron films.

The Canadian director responded to this death in an e-mail sent to the editor of the Vanity Fair :

Bill leaves such a void. He and I have been close friends for 36 years. […] It was a friendship of laughter, adventure, love of cinema and mutual respect. I hope that in the midst of the uproar caused by the Oscars, people will take a moment to remember this wonderful man.

Viewers knew for his role as polygamist in the Big Love series (aired on HBO), for which he was nominated three times at the Golden Globes. His partner in Big Love , Chloë Sevigny, spoke Sunday of an honorable, caring person, with a big heart and a smile always hanging on his face.

Bill Paxton has brought a human dimension to big budget adventure and science fiction movies. It was, as science fiction admirers like to point out, the only actor killed by a “predator”, a “terminator” and an alien.

But has also defined his career with the roles ordinary man in films like One wrong move ( One False Move ), A Simple Plan ( A Simple Plan ) and The Prowler ( Nightcrawler ).

I’m a frustrated romantic actor. I wanted to play the role of Bud in Splendor in the blood [ Splendor in the Grass ], I wanted to play Romeo – the great tragic love stories.

He also directed The Greatest Game Ever Played , filmed mainly in Montreal.
